ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS PRESS TEXT ADDRESSED BY COMRADE IDOWU
ODEBUNMI, NANS NATIONAL PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER, ON THE BRUTALITY MELTED OUT
BY MEN OF THE NIGERIA POLICE FORCE ON NIGERIA STUDENTS HELD ON 17TH FEBRUARY,
2017 AT THE HEAD OFFICE OF COMMITTEE FOR DEFENCE OF HUMAN RIGHT, IKEJA LAGOS.
PROTOCOLS
NANS
BESEECHES THE NIGERIA POLICE FORCE TO STOP THE BRUTALITY AGAINST NIGERIAN
STUDENTS
With
no idea of malice compiled with maximum passion for the welfare of the entire
Nigerian students, National development and security dexterity, the National
Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) which is the umbrella body of all
Nigerian students schooling within and outside the country have recorded
several instances of police brutality on our students across the federation.
Police
abuse remains one of the most serious human rights violations in the world.
Over recent times, the Nigeria police force (NPF) has acted out in ways that
have made the Nigerian students wondered if our officers of the law are really
doing their job? There have been several reports of unjustified shooting,
severe beatings, fatal choking, unlawful arrests, extortion, unlawful killings
and rough treatment melted out on our students.
The
memories of UNIPORT killing, the gun shots on the protesters of RUFUS GIWA
POLYTECHNIC, the unlawful arrest of EKITI STATE UNIVERSITY SUG PRESIDENT and
that of the POLYTECHNIC IBADAN STUDENT UNION LEADERS, the UNIOSUN killings and
the roles the Nigeria police force played on the issues of rusticated UNILAG
STUDENT LEADERS by refusing their reinstatement. All this and more still
lingers in the heart of the entire Nigeria students with the most recent being
an unjustifiable attack unleashed on one of our female student named SEWUESE
MATHEW.
The
big question on our lips still remains how long shall we keep mute in the face
of social injustice and tyrannical attitude of people in authority?
``never
be afraid to raise your voice for honesty, truth and compassion against
injustice, lying and greed, if people all over the world do -WILLIAM FAULKNER
SEWUESE
MATHEW, a student of Lagos State University whose unfortunate attack happened
at Durosimi Drive Etti Lekki Phase 1
Lagos State Around 11:30am on Wednesday
8th
of February, 2017 in company of her
elder Sister, LILIAN IFEMELUDIKE who is a Champion Ambassador of the United
Nations for Women Empowerment was also a
victim of
the
days molestation as she was not spared by men of the Nigeria Police Force
attached to Durosimi Drive, Etti , Lekki Phase 1 Lagos on their way to the
United Nation Women Empowerment mission.
As
an affected Nigerian student, our Findings reveals that they were both beaten
up mercilessly, her phones which cost lot of Naira’s,
was seized and have not been returned as at the time of this press statement,
they were both locked up at Oshodi police station, charged to court before
SEWUESE MATHEW was later transferred to kirikiri cell. In this same vein, a serving corp member who
is giving back to his father’s land was molested
yesterday the 15th of Feb, 2017 by men of the police force.
The Nigeria Student under the umbrella of NANS
totally condemns such barbaric act and unprofessional attitude displayed by men
of the Nigeria Police Force
Freedom
is never voluntarily given by the oppressor, it must be demanded by the
oppressed -Martin Luther King .Jnr
OUR
RESSOLUTION
That
men of the Nigeria police force needs to learn to stop criminalizing everything
and everybody
That
mobile phone is a personal belonging and that the Nigeria Police Force should
stop harassing members of the society by collecting their phone
That
the phone collected from our female student should be returned with immediate
effect
Resuscitation
of police/student relations committee
Proper
attention must be looked into when recruiting
officers, in their training and management
That
the Inspector General of Police should caution his men in the areas of
harassment and extortion from student under the pretence of referring to all
young male students as yahoo boys.
That
men of the police force should be taught the proper ways on how to approach and
handle protesters
That
men of the Nigeria Police Force should
be trained to be members of a society, not just armed patrol men
Adequate
welfare must be provided to rank and file officers of the Nigeria Police Force
That
the entire Nigeria student demand rightful and unvictimized peaceful protest in
their various institutions whenever the need arises without the men of the
force harassing them.
“If
you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything”
as over 40.1million Nigerian students are set to storm the Nigeria Police Force
Headquarters’ if the killings, harassment and extortion on our student does not stop.
Long
live Nigeria Students!!!
Long
live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!!!
