Aregbesola Bags Leadership Award in Islamic Finance


Commendations and laurels came the way of the Governor of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, again on Thursday as he was honoured for his contributory role in the development of Islamic finance system in Nigeria.

The governor was given the “Leadership Award in Islamic Finance’ on Thursday by the International Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance (IIIBF) of the Bayero University, Kano. The IIIBF said it gave the Governor the award because of his administration’s pioneering role in the issuance of Sukuk Bond in the country.

In 2013, Osun became the first state government to issue Islamic (Sukuk) bond in the history of Islamic finance in Nigeria.

The Osun initiative has however opened the door for other states and Federal government to explore the huge benefits derivable from the interest-free Sukuk Islamic bond. Other awardees in this category includes, the Emir of Kano, HRH Sanusi Lamido Sanusi and the Chairman of Jaiz Bank, Alhaji Umar Mutallab.

In a statement by the Bureau of Communication and strategy in the office of the governor, Governor Aregbesola said the award represented a recognition for his administration’s many trail-blazing zeal in many respects.

In the statement signed by the Director of the Bureau, Semiu Okanlawon, Aregbesola was quoted as saying he took Sukuk because of its numerous economic benefits to develop the state. “Sukuk offers huge opportunities and financial latitude for development because of the interest-free policy it offers debtors. It was this opportunity that we seized and utilized through the bonds to upgrade the state infrastructure in the area of education.”

“The N11bn sukuk bond Osun took is what is being used to finance some of the schools being built especially the High Schools. Specifically it has helped us change the face of education through the construction of what can be called the best schools in Nigeria today. President Buhari was in Osun in September to commission one of such schools, The Osogbo Government High School.

Speaking at the award ceremony, the former Minister of National Planning, Dr. Shamsudeen Usman, said Osun State is the most informed state in Nigeria on Islamic financial system. Usman commended Osun for blazing the trail in the Islamic finances for other to follow.

Osun State Collaborate With CBN On Youth Empowerment


The South-West quarterly technical meeting and the graduation ceremony of the second batch of the training programme for unemployed youths in the state of Osun comes up on the 19th and 20th of this month.

The programme put together by government of the state of Osun in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria will be declared open by the Deputy Governor of Osun, Mrs Titi Laoye Tomori at SUBEB warehouse hall, beside Osun fire services office, Abere at 10 in the morning.

This is contained in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Mr Festus Olajide.

Also to be discussed during the meeting according to the statement are new ideas of moving forward, the programme will also create an opportunity whereby there will be exchange of ideas between members at the event.

Nigeria Air Force Constitutes Panel To Investigate Rann Accidental Air Strike


The Nigerian Air Force has constituted a 6-man investigation panel that will investigate the remote causes of the accidental bomb incident that took place at an IDP camp in Rann, Borno state on Tuesday January 17th.
Over 50 persons and counting have died from the unfortunate incident. A statement signed by NAFs Director of Public Relations and Information, Group Captain Ayodele Famuyiwa, the committee is meant to present its report on or before February 2nd.

Troops from Senegal are already in Gambia and making their way to Banjul. The Nigerian Air Force, NAF, has also arrived Gambia as part of the ECOWAS Military intervention in Gambia. However, the NAF disclosed Thursday on their Facebook account that the Nigerian Army and the Navy were getting ready to join other troops in Gambia.
NAF revealed that two NAF C-130 aircraft airlifted troops of the Nigerian Army and men of the Nigerian Navy Special Boat Services to Senegal yesterday. They also went on to share photos as the Nigerian troops got ready to leave for Senegal from where they will enter Gambia.


20 Kenyan Lawyers Have Been Sacked And 12 Others Suspended


The legal professionals whose names were published Friday, January 20, 2017, were dismissed by Advocates Complaints Commission (ACC), following complaints from the public on gross misconduct. According to Attorney General Githu Muigai, he said their dismissal came after an evidence of gross professional misconduct emanated.


‘Disciplinary action taken against an advocate emanates from the evidence of gross professional misconduct as reported by complainants to, received and reviewed by the Advocates Complaints Commission.’ Following the disciplinary action, the advocates will no longer be able to conduct the duties of advocates and will also seize to represent clients nor appear in a court of law in Kenya.
