A police sergeant attached to Ikotun police division of the Lagos state
police command has ingested substances suspected to be poison in an
attempt to kill himself.
The sergeant, according to The Eagle Online, was
arrested for extortion after he was accused, alongside other policemen
also in detention, of extorting money from some youths who went to the
bank to make withdrawals.
The extortion by the
policemen was reported to the divisional police officer of Ikotun by
some residents of the area who live close to bank and have been
observing the activities of some of the policemen.
The DPO then dispatched some under covered
policemen to the scene and the policemen were arrested in the act on
December 28, 2016 and detained.
While
in detention, one of the arrested policemen took substances suspected
to be poison on Tuesday, January 3, in an attempt to kill himself.
But he was rescued and later rushed to a private hospital where he was placed under intensive care.
In another development, a civil protest by workers of Chi Limited, has gone sought, resulting into the death of two workers.
The Punch reports that the two casual workers lost their lives after a team of policemen opened fire on them during a protest at the company’s headquarters in Ajao Estate, Lagos state.
The
deceased, 19-year-old Daniel Osikoya, and the other, whose name had yet
to be ascertained, died from the gun injuries they sustained in the leg
and thigh respectively.
